The Order of the Zähringer Lion was one of the highest awards of the Grand Duchy of Baden and was founded on December 26, 1812 by Grand Duke Karl. The Commander's Cross was one of the higher classes of the order and was awarded to people who had distinguished themselves through special services to the state or the monarchy.
