The Order of Franz Joseph, founded in 1849 by Emperor Franz Joseph I, was one of the most prestigious orders of merit in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, honoring outstanding civilian and military achievements of the highest rank.
The Grand Cross with Grand Cross Star was the highest grade of the order and was reserved exclusively for the highest dignitaries. The War Decoration (from 1916 onward), in the form of a green laurel wreath, signified awards for merit in war, while the swords additionally emphasized personal commitment and military leadership in combat.
The combination of Grand Cross Star, War Decoration, and swords is among the rarest and most prestigious variants of the Order of Franz Joseph and today possesses exceptional historical and collector value.
