The eight-pointed breast star of the Russian Order of Saint Stanislaus, 1st Class with Swords, was awarded in the Russian Empire for exceptional military merit during wartime. The inclusion of swords explicitly denotes an award given under wartime conditions and distinguishes this variant from civilian or peacetime awards of the order. At the center of the breast star is the medallion bearing the motto "Praemiando incitat" ("Reward incites"), surrounded by the characteristic symbolism of the order. The crossed swords, usually placed between the medallion and the star's rays, signify active military service and were reserved for senior officers.
