Combat badge, Order of Friedrich August of Oldenburg, 2nd Class, "For Valor in Battle"
The Frederick Augustus Cross was established in 1914 by the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg as an award for meritorious service during the First World War. The second class was awarded as a cross worn on a ribbon. For recipients who earned the award for actions taken directly in combat, a special clasp with the inscription "BEFORE THE ENEMY" could be added to the ribbon. This clasp signified exceptional bravery and served to distinguish those who had served in combat from those who had performed purely administrative or logistical duties.
