Hungary, Order of St. Stephen, Grand Cross Breast Star
The Grand Cross Breast Star of the Hungarian Order of St. Stephen was one of the highest awards of the Kingdom of Hungary. The order was founded in 1764 by Empress Maria Theresa and named after the first Hungarian king, Stephen I.
The breast star of the Grand Cross consisted of an eight-pointed silver star, upon which the order's medallion was affixed. This depicted the red cross of the order surrounded by a green laurel wreath on a white background, with the monogram "MT" for Maria Theresa in the center. The breast star was worn on the left side of the chest in conjunction with the order's chain or shoulder ribbon.
The Order of St. Stephen was one of the highest Hungarian awards until 1946 and was awarded primarily to prominent personalities at home and abroad.
