Wound Badge for the Army and Colonial Troops Silver openwork
The 1918 Wound Badge for the Army and Colonial Troops in Silver was an award for soldiers wounded in the First World War. It was awarded in three grades: black for one wound, silver for three, and gold for five or more wounds. The openwork version is particularly rare because it differs visually from the closed form. Instead of a continuous area around the steel helmet, the background is cut out, leaving only the edge and the motif. The badge was usually made of iron or non-ferrous metal and then painted black. It served as a visible symbol of the sacrifices made by soldiers at the front.
